How to get to Ghent?

By air
There are two mayor airports in Belgium:
  • Brussels Airport (this is the main airport also known as Zaventem, about 60 km away from Ghent)
From Brussels Airport the easiest way to get to Ghent is by train (see below). The train ride to Ghent takes approximately 30 minutes. For flight details, connections and local transportation from the airport please check the airport's website: http://www.brusselsairport.be.

  • Charleroi Airport (also known as Brussels South, about 60 km away from Brussels). http://www.charleroi-airport.com/
From Charleroi Airport a one-hour bus trip takes you from Charleroi to Brussels (Bruxelles Midi/Brussel Zuid), from where you continue to Ghent by train.
By train
Most of you coming by air will arrive at Brussels Airport. During the day, there are 3 to 4 trains an hour. In most cases, you will have to switch trains in Brussels-Nord (Brussel-Noord - Bruxelles-Nord, this is usually the first stop). You can check train schedules at http://www.b-rail.be/main/E/ - Click on National and use "Brussels Airport" for airport and "Gent Sint Pieters" for the main railway station in Ghent.

When arriving at Brussels Airport, just go to the lowest level (-1) since the railway station is below street level. You can buy your ticket to Ghent at the desk. They will inform you on where to change trains.

Warning: be aware of pick pockets in the larger train stations in Brussels, escpecially in Brussels-South (Brussel-Midi - Brussel-Zuid).

By car
The dense highway network in Belgium allows you to access Ghent easily by car. Two main highways, E40 (Liege-Brussel-Gent-Brugge-Oostende) and E17 (Antwerpen-Gent-Kortrijk-Lille), cross at Ghent. In the city centre 9 car parks offer close to 4700 parking places. The parking route forms a loop around the city and brings you from one parking to the other. There is a parking guidance system that informs you in which parking there is free space.
Directions: Choose exit "Gent/Antwerpen" on the E40 (Oostende - Brussel). Follow direction: "Gent-Centrum".
